Common Health concerns and Tips for your new Frenchie!

We recommend reviewing these tips before bringing home your fur-ever friend!

Allergies- Since Frenchies are a sensitive breed,  giving treats to your pup can cause inflammation in the Ears, Skin, GI system, and Feet. They contain many artificial flavors, colors, and preservatives and can lead to pancreatitis and many other health concerns.

1. A healthy alternative:  instead of a  treat, try a piece of boiled/freeze-dried Chicken/ Beef or a little dry kibble.

Heat Exhaustion vs. Heatstroke

Heat exhaustion is the condition that occurs before heatstroke. Untreated heat exhaustion can lead to heatstroke.

1. Causes of Heatstroke in French Bulldogs

  •    Leaving your dog in the car on a hot day
  •    No shade or water when outside
  •    Ignoring signs of heat stress
  •    High temperature & humidity
  •    Lack of airflow in the environment
  •    Sudden exposure to hot weather. Frenchies esp. take time to acclimate to temperatures.

Back issues/IVDD

-7 Steps To Prevent IVDD in French Bulldogs

As a future French Bulldog owner, getting as familiar with the breed as possible is essential.

IVDD isn't something all French Bulldogs develop. A genetic predisposition doesn't equal disease.

However, it is crucial to follow these preventative measures to reduce your Frenchie's risk of being affected as much as possible.

1. Keep Your French Bulldog Puppy nice and lean

The most crucial step to prevent IVDD in French Bulldogs is to keep your dog's weight

down to eliminate extra stress on the neck and back. The ideal body shape is one where the waist

can be visible and ribs easily felt.

Puppyhood weight will determine adulthood weight. If you are over-feeding your French Bulldog puppy, the dog will develop more fat cells, which equals an overweight adult. This is a mistake that some owners make. They want a cute, chunky, roly-poly pup. Unfortunately, that equals health problems in the future.

2. Harness Vs. Collar

Use a harness when walking your French Bulldog. Not only can using a collar cause difficulty breathing in a brachycephalic dog breed, but it can also put extra stress on the neck and put your dog at risk for IVDD.

We recommend the Easy on the harness by tags for hope. Click here

3. Limit Jumping

This is a hard one; they are dogs, and of course, they love being active, which

involves high-impact activities like jumping on and off high furniture.

But if a ramp/doggie stairs are introduced at a young age, and your Frenchie is trained to use

only that specifically, they might never realize that jumping from beds and couches is an option.
